Mentored by top musicians from Il Gardellino and B’Rock and led by Peter Whelan, they put on their dancing shoes for a programme that revolves entirely around Baroque suites. It will be hard to sit still during the MA Academy concert on Monday 5 August. Taking Johann Sebastian Bach’s fourth suite as their guideline, our young musicians will be dancing their way through 18th century Europe. The suite – created and danced at court before being immortalised as a concert genre – is the quintessence of movement in music. How do Johann Sebastian Bach, John Locke, Johann Friedrich Fasch and Evaristo Felice Dall’Abaco relate to each other in the swirl of a suite? Germany, England, France and Italy? We discover the answer together.

With music by Johann Sebastian Bach (16851750), John Locke (16321704), Johann Friedrich Fasch (16881758) & Evaristo Felice Dall’Abaco (16751742)

In collaboration with Concertgebouw Brugge, Il Gardellino & B’Rock Orchestra

During MA Academy 2024, Peter Whelan will take on the musical direction. Whelan is one of the most versatile representatives of historical performance practice of his generation. He has had a remarkable career as a conductor, keyboardist, and solo bassoonist, serving as the artistic director of the Irish Baroque Orchestra and founding artistic director of Ensemble Marsyas. As a conductor, Whelan has a particular passion for exploring and promoting Baroque music that has long been neglected.
