The Competition

One of the most challenging and also one of the most prestigious international competitions, MA Competition, ever since its creation in 1964, has established itself as as an unparalleled talent hub. Each year, exceptional emerging musicians from all over the world benefit from opportunities to dialogue with leading professionals in the field of Early Music, enabling them to perfect their artistic practice.

MA Competition is a unique platform for training and the professional integration of young artists with the objective of revealing new talent and facilitating new encounters. Its singularity stems from its place at the heart of MA Festival, which nurtures it from within by actively supporting the artistic processes and the essential values of equality, diversity and inclusion.

In 2021 MA Competition was organised for melodic instruments, namely traverso, recorder, baroque oboe, baroque violin, baroque cello and viola da gamba.

From now on, the first round is conducted digitally and takes place before the festival. The jury and audience simultaneously get to know the candidates for the first time via an online streaming platform.

Moreover, the competition will no longer be organised annually, but on a biennial basis, with keyboard instruments (harpsichord and fortepiano) alternating with melodic instruments.

The first prize winner will receive a cash prize and an invitation to perform at a series of concerts in Belgium and abroad, including a place in the next edition of MA Festival. Moreover, one of the candidates will be given the opportunity to record a CD at the internationally-renowned Ricercar label.
