One of the most challenging and also one of the most prestigious international competitions, MA Competition, ever since its creation in 1964, has established itself as as an unparalleled talent hub. Each year, exceptional emerging musicians from all over the world benefit from opportunities to dialogue with leading professionals in the field of Early Music, enabling them to perfect their artistic practice.
The MA Competition is a unique platform for training and the professional integration of young artists with the objective of revealing new talent and facilitating new encounters. Its singularity stems from its place at the heart of MA Festival, which nurtures it from within by actively supporting the artistic processes and the essential values of equality, diversity and inclusion.
In 2021 MA Competition will be organised for melodic instruments, namely traverso, recorder, baroque oboe, baroque violin, baroque cello and viola da gamba.
From now on, the first round will be conducted digitally and will take place in May. The jury and audience will simultaneously get to know the candidates for the first time via an online streaming platform. This first round will take place from 7 to 9 May 2021 inclusive.
Following the deliberation of the first round on 10 May 2021, the jury will announce the twelve semi-finalists. The semi-final will take place live in Bruges on Thursday 12 August, and the final on Saturday 14 August during MA Festival 2021.
Moreover, from now on the competition will no longer be organised annually, but on a biennial basis, with keyboard instruments (harpsichord and fortepiano) alternating with melodic instruments.
The first prize winner will receive a cash prize and an invitation to perform at a series of concerts in Belgium and abroad, including a place in the next edition of MA Festival. Moreover, one of the candidates will be given the opportunity to record a CD at the internationally-renowned Ricercar label.
